Miguel has gone off to Germany on a University-related trip, leaving me with no Camera to take any pictures..! Thankfully, I had some already uploaded of the fabulous Pick Me Up Graphic Arts fair that was on at Somerset House last week. Lucy invited me to go along with her for her birthday, and i’m so glad that I did – I was so inspired by all the art on show, but even better than that was Rob Ryan’s open studio.
If you’re a long-time reader, you’ll probably remember me talking about how much I love Rob Ryan’s paper cuts before, so imagine how excited I was to watch him in action! I took so many pictures of the ‘studio’, with it’s inspiration-board walls, I even snapped a few of Rob and his team at work on a huge paper cut. I was (loudly) complaining about how I find it hard to cut around small curves, Rob overheard and gave me some tips! I’ve only just got round to giving it a go..now I just need to come up with a design to cut out.
I wish I had the time to post about this before the show was over because it was definitely worth a visit – Did anyone else get to go?! I’m hoping to pay a visit to his shop on Columbia Road this weekend, i’d love to own some of his art! ..i’ll keep you updated and tell you if I get my hands on any..!
I found this video on Rob Ryan’s Blog, it’s a timelapse of the huge, detailed paper cut that they were working on at the fair – it’s so beautiful:
Please note I didn’t take this video! Click on the Vimeo logo for the original.
pssst: All of my work for my first year at University has been handed in – i’m free! See you here more often! xx

OMG he does such amazing stuff! Lucky you of seeing him in action!
His work is breathtaking. I can only imagine the hours spent creating.

excellent!
Always so good to see some Rob Ryan! Saw you the other day at the my-wardrobe press day, wanted to come and introduce myself but didn’t have any free time! Hope you enjoyed it and congrats on the coursework! x
I would have loved to have seen this but I was only told about it when I was on the coach back to Newcastle on Saturday night … grr!!! It looks awesome!!
Carrie, these photos are brilliant! I adore Rob Ryan. When I’m older and hopefully filthy rich I want to commission him to create something! Amazing. x
I am happy hearing you can be here more often!!!
ryan is great! I like his works!!!

That’s AMAZING. The detail – god and so delicate, imagine if you slipped and ripped it!!! I love papercut art, it’s stunning.
AMAZING!!! I can’t imagine how much care and patience it would take to cut those intricate designs out. Last week I cut out a rollerskate stencil and that was hard enough, hahaha! Thanks for sharing this
This is so weird, we were reading about him the other day at uni. He seems like a really nice man, and his art is SOO pretttyyy. How on earth someone can have enough patience to do all that is magical!
i love rob ryan’s work! i’m jealous you got to go see him at somerset house. i was in london during the fair, but i didn’t have enough time to make it there. i was ever so disappointed.
oh man and i thought the work i had to do with an exacto blade at work was bad – nothing in the world could ever make me work with an exacto that in detail – even though it’s so so so so beautiful.
i envy their patience. and hands. and backs – my back kills after an hour of standing bent over whatever i have to cut!
how awful would it be to mess up? i’d cry for a day ^_^
lucky girl though – hope you get your camera/boy back soon – my boy gives me my camera as well – yay for boys with nice cameras
Wow, that’s amazing! I’m very impatient and quite clumsy, so I probably shouldn’t embark on papercutting myself, but those designs are beautiful and I can imagine that it’s quite inspiring to see them created.
I love paper cuts! Rob Ryan is amazing.
that HUGE paper cut, ohmygoodness. it must have taken so much patience for them to complete it, i cant imagine myself doing it. thank you for posting picture of this they’re amazingly inspiring. & i missed your posts!
very inspiring place!
I went to this too – it was super amazing to see! I would love to own his art too! So good to see the finished piece he was working on Thanks for sharing! xx
