Last week I spent four days in the beautiful Antwerp, Belgium on a ‘school trip’ away with my university class. At first mention, I wasn’t particularly excited by the thought of Antwerp (I knew nothing about it) and hadn’t ever considered visiting, but I’m so glad that I did, as you’ll see from my incessant photography. I think my whole class fell in love with it – but perhaps that was because of all the beer..!
We arrived on a sunny afternoon (well done Carrie for wearing a jumper, I thought), and I spent the rest of it wandering the city – this is always my favourite part of a trip. I shed my tights and then ran in to a couple of friends, we bought strawberries (okay, they bought strawberries, I was on the chocolate chip cookies for the rest of the night) and went to sit by the river for sunset. You’d never guess we all have a dissertation to hand in in a few weeks…
If you’ve not been before, I can probably sum up Antwerp in a few words: fries, waffles, bicycles, small dogs and beer. A winning combination! I have a million more photos to share with you, including a few of the above (okay, a LOT of the above, especially the bicycles!).
As for my outfit, I hadn’t planned to photograph it until Lucy snapped the above whilst the sun was shining the right direction. A huge serving of grey with a splash of orange on the side, perfect for the Eurostar, not so practical on the streets of Antwerp – my legs were permenantly on show for the rest of the trip! x

Never been there in spite of the fact that I am like barely an hour far from Antwerp. I should probably give it a try, looks like a nice city.
(Since they are also cheap I am not sure they are made with good ingredients, but still, they are the best cookies ever!)
Oh, you bought the best belgian cookies ever
I love your picts & your blog. So inspiring!!!

.
with it too
Belgium in general is about bikes
But Antwerp has these cool shops with redesigned vintage bikes. I adore it, I even want to repaint my old bike in mintgreen.
So nice that you like Antwerp, but you must visit Bruges, Brussel and ghent too. Not to forget the beautiful countryside, but England has enough of that
One question, Where are those shoes from?!!x
Carrie!! Antwerp is my favourite city in the whole world, no joke!
I’m going back there in two weeks and I can’t wait. I love the architecture, the people and the traditions (and of course the beer!)
How come you were there for a school trip? Visiting the RA or museum or something? xx
It looks amazing! Some friends and I have a plan to go there one day, now I can’t wait to!
Perfect photography! You look beautiful xx
You really do take the most beautiful photos, well jealous of your desperados!

I was hoping to catch your Antwerp post before going to Antwerp yesterday!
It was a nice little daytrip (I live near Brussels) and it’s always nice to walk around the little streets around the Meir
Anyway, you looked lovely!

Waffles!!! I backpacked Europe two summers ago and I still can’t get over the waffles (smothered in warm, melted chocolate!) that I ate in Belgium and Amsterdam. They just do NOT exist in the US, no matter how much I crave them!

Antwerp’s actually known for it’s shopping and it’s diamond district
I’m from Belgium, but it’s a two hour train ride, so I don’t go there that often. But it is greaat for shopping
Nothing like London or Paris of course, but still. I’m usually dead tired when I get home, from all the walking, haha :p
We have a lot of cities that still have old, pretty buildings, so I don’t really notice it anymore, to be honest

Hello! geaeega interesting geaeega site! I’m really like it! Very, very geaeega good!
Excellent weblog here! Additionally your website so much up fast! What web host are you the use of? Can I am getting your associate link for your host? I wish my web site loaded up as fast as yours lol
My friend just sent me the link to this blog as she has the magazine, and as I’m living in Antwerp at the moment, she’s scanning in the magazine with bits on Antwerp for me.
Just thought I would say that you definitely need to spend more time here. When I first visited, it was only for 1 night/1 day. I got wasted in a bar with some beatnik playing pool, climbed the parking garage in the middle of the street and fell asleep by a lampost before hungoverly visiting MoMu and being very frustrated at the rain. Now that I’m into my 6th week of living here, I would sum it up with these words: quiet (I usually live in London…), Jewish, cobbles, fries, party, fashion, Schelde.
There isn’t as many waffles here as there is in Brussels, but a great deal of small dogs, I have noticed that, including one being pushed in a pram by an older man. I think it’s a place you need to take your time in – even after this length of time and many hours of walking around the city, I am still finding new places hidden away. I am going to be very sad when I have to go back to London in October. London doesn’t look quite as pretty in a storm as Antwerp does, with the rain bouncing off the cobbles and people darting home on their bikes or stopping under the canopy of a bar, as happened today.
I urge all of you to come and visit! Don’t plan to see the tourist things – just walk around, explore the vast array of flea markets, hire a bike and go to the park, stop and have a coffee, yes, also eat a waffle, stop for a beer or two and some jenever, go on to the river and sit a while before getting some more beer in a different area and before going off to party at Cafe D’Anvers, then some early morning frituur before bed.
