Palácio da Pena

Breezy

One of our last tasks in Portugal was to visit Sintra, around an hours drive away. It had always been on my to-do list, but when we arrived I couldn’t believe we hadn’t gone sooner – the place was beautiful! Granted, I’d never seen as many tourists in Portugal in my life (making it difficult to capture the place on camera without children galore in shot), but it wasn’t without reason. The area is a must-see if you’re visiting Lisbon. It boasts several palaces and castles, but our first choice was the Romanticist Palácio da Pena. We were almost literally in the clouds by the time we made it up to the former royal holiday home, it’s most impressive part being it’s location atop a mountain. The beautiful view was unfortunately paired with gale force winds, hence the unruly hair in the images above! I was grateful I’d chose to wear a long dress too – no flashing for me! Plus, there was the added bonus of feeling a bit like a princess, swishing about the place.

The gardens were equally as beautiful – we got lost trying to find our way out, but that was no bad thing we came across one hydrangea bush after another (they seem to be a big thing in Sintra – does anybody know why?), black swans and lakes..it was a dream world. We could have stayed forever, but travelled back down the mountain along with the sun, leaving plenty more to explore next year. Of course, we had to grab a pastel nata and iced tea for the road. See you next year, Sintra! x
