There isn’t an awful lot to do in Somerset, but I had managed to write a list as long as my arm of places I wanted to show Lucy whilst she was here for the week. Of course, an obligatory visit to my nearest city, Wells, was in order. It’s the second smallest city in England, did you know?!
Whilst I don’t see it as somewhere you would travel very far to visit, it’s nice to see if you are in the area, so I thought i’d show Lucy around my favourite spots.
Vintage? Yes Please
A spot of vintage shopping was first on the agenda when we visited one of my favourite places – the Wells Trading Post. It really is a treasure trove, and I came close to buying a picnic basket and antique white smock dress (perfect combo, no?!) before Lucy quickly brought me back down to earth, reminding me of my shopping ban. Boo! The little bear above was one of my favourite finds too – I always seem to find one sitting in a corner somewhere looking sad..and it usually ends up in my bedroom at some point or another…
Posing Time
A trip anywhere wouldn’t be complete without a bit of posing at a picturesque location – or maybe that’s just us bloggers! We parked ourselves up outside the Bishops Palace moat to eat ice cream and take some pictures. The glorious weather has not helped my photography as of late – it becomes increasingly difficult to find shade to take pictures in, but Lucy managed to snap a few of my new Lowie playsuit and in return I took a few of her with her brand new super-soft Mulberry Leah, fresh from the factory shop in my town.
Sadly Lucy has now gone home, taking her hat with her (I took every opportunity to pose in it!) but i’m determined to find my own, even lovlier hat…once this shopping ban has lifted..! x
It seems as if summer has finally arrived for good, which is great as my friend Lucy has come to Somerset for the week to visit. Our first day involved showing her around my little town, taking her to the nearby Mulberry outlet (where she may have made a very exciting purchase!!) and visiting the gardens that i’ve photographed in before. Remember them?
Lucy used the time to write a Glastonbury Festival themed postcard to her family, whilst I was just..chillin’..? We had the entire place to ourselves, so could roll around on the grass by the lake taking pictures without feeling at all foolish. Doesn’t Lucy look beautiful in her huge red hat and teeny-tiny red shorts?
I wore a vintage skirt, and a navy top from Topshop, with my white jazz shoes and Lucy’s hat that hasn’t left my head since I put it back on again – Lucy, if you’re reading, consider it stolen!!
Now, Lucy and I are off to the best festival in the world – Glastonbury – this morning. I have gone every year since I was 2 years old and it always marks the beginning of my summer. I’ll be posting about each day in the evenings (assuming we get home at a reasonable time) as i’m not camping there this year. I’m so excited that I could hardly sleep! Have a lovely day girls x
I’ve had the idea in my head for some time that I was going to make my own floral headband after I couldn’t find any I liked in my price range online. Unfortunately, this one isn’t quite there yet, when I ordered the paper flowers online I assumed they would be bigger (always read measurements!!) but I thought i’d give it a go anyway.
The headband took around half an hour to make, and was done simply by wrapping the wire-stemmed flowers around an old black headband. It would be far better in a matching colour, or a colour that matched your hair, but it was the only one I had to hand and I’m impatient like that…!
The flowers were bought here. It’s comfy to wear, as long as you make sure all of the wire ends are tucked away neatly. It’s a little too bridesmaid for my liking, so I shall be trying again with larger flowers when I can get my hands on some. What do you think? xx
I never thought i’d see the day where I was wearing boyfriend jeans, did you?
I was invited along to the Net-A-Porter denim boutique launch a little while ago, and i’ll admit, when I was on my way I had no intention of blogging about it – it’s not my style to rattle off press releases and super expensive designer jeans have never been my thing. But I was genuinely interested by their promise of ‘finding me the perfect style of jeans for my body’ (the only pair I own are the most uncomfortable things that I always regret putting on), and I had no idea that they were actually going to GIVE me a pair! Most of the girls spotted a pair they liked and asked for them, but after a chat with a stylist about what I usually wear, I decided she could pick out a pair for me…that was what it was all about, after all…
Fast forward several weeks, and I’d finally got hold of my jeans. After removing them from their rather magnificent packaging, I let out an audible “oh..”. Now I know that sounds terribly ungrateful, but the words “low-rise boyfriend jeans” instilled a little fear in me – I was already planning giving them away on here, but I thought I should at least try them on first.
My worst fears were realised – I looked and felt ‘mumsy’. How could I make BAGGY jeans look chic? That was when I went on a hunt for inspiring street style pictures, and turned to the Net-A-Porter boutique for some styling advice. After feeling suitably inspired, I decided I WOULD MAKE THEM WORK!!
I’m glad I did give them a go because they are the comfiest pair of trousers I own. I will admit that it took me a little while to choose pictures for this post, as I felt a little curvier than usual because of the low waist (and perhaps that custard donut I ate before taking them..) but I hope I managed to pick a few that show a proud size 12 girl looking good in baggy jeans. It can be done – Thank you Net-A-Porter! xx
So it’s day one of my summer clothing ban, and i’m already making wish lists. I’ve come to the saddening realisation that it’s probably time I got myself a summer job…sitting around looking at pretty websites certainly isn’t doing me any favours, as instead of buying clothes i’ve managed to spend over £20 on paper flowers and sketchbooks?!! I think somebody needs to take my card away..I might have to ask Miguel to hide it for me when he comes to visit this weekend. I obviously have a problem.
Anthropologie is a favourite of mine. I’m never overly fond of the clothes as I find them a bit grown-up, but I couldn’t help but purchase the Lowie playsuit above as part of my final “big spend” (yes, it wasn’t the only thing I bought..*gulp*) that I mentioned yesterday. It was on sale, and you know what us girls are like when it’s sale time, it’s all about the £100 that you’re saving rather than the £60 that you are. The playsuit, which was obviously created just for me, caught my eye last September at fashion week. I even took a photo of it then! So I was delighted to see it in the sale.
As for the other items on my mini wishlist, they’re just pure indulgence that I happened upon whilst browsing. Anthropologie homewares are my weakness – £138 is probably not the kind of money i’m going to be dropping on a ‘cookie stand‘, and I already own 2 copies of Pride and Prejudice..but, oh, the cover is so..yellow. The illustrated plates are more realistic at £24; i’ve got my eye on the eiffel tower version. With a birthday coming up it’s always a good idea to put a few wishlists together (especially when you know your mum is reading..!!! Hi Mum!!) even if it is a little painful.
Since I started blogging, i’ve bought, and bought, and bought some more. Being immersed in style blogs, studying fashion and living in London isn’t such a healthy combination in terms of my bank balance – there is always something i’m new i’m after to complete an outfit. This has meant some ridiculous behaviour on my part – buying clothes that are worn once and then put back into the wardrobe before I move onto the next, or even buying clothes that don’t fit properly and keeping them back for when they do. I’m sure I can’t be the only one guilty of these fashion crimes? It got to the point where I couldn’t take all my clothes home to Somerset with me.
It’s clear I need a huge cull, but as well as that, I need to stop spending. I’m not rich by any means – but I don’t go out and i’m very careful with my money, meaning I have a bit of my student loan leftover to spend on clothes. I’m not sure that is what it’s for (oops). A ‘reader’ was once cheeky enough to tell me that I should stop spending my “mummy and daddy’s money”, which is just preposterous, as everything is bought out of my own pocket..leading to a very empty one come the end of term.
Now, i’m proposing that after a big spend just the other day, I will not buy any item of clothing until September unless it is from a charity shop. I’ve said this time and time again, but now i’ve written a whole post on it, I HAVE to stick to it. Okay, so it might not be the most exciting thing in terms of pictures for you, but i’ll spend the summer reworking items that I was fortunate enough to fit into my suitcase. Sound like a deal?! Done! Wish me luck! xx
I have so many pretty things to photograph and nothing to photograph with – i’ve sadly misplaced my camera battery charger, and have had to order a new one..so i’ve been waiting for the past week for it to turn up. Can you imagine being a blogger if digital cameras weren’t around?! I can’t handle not having instant photos! I have however been using my new Diana Mini, of which i’m on my first ever roll of film – I can’t wait to see what I get..i’ve been carrying it everywhere with me and snapping away randomly. It’s so tiny that it’s easy to keep in your bag, and another plus is I found mine on eBay, brand new for £20! i’ll post up the pictures as soon as they’re developed.
To apologise for this terrible filler post, i’m opening up my links section to you lovely people. I need to get going on writing the links page, so if you’d like to be included, i’d love to add you – just leave a comment below letting me know and i’ll add you to the list.
I’ll see you again tomorrow, hope you’re having a lovely evening xx
Stop! I didn’t quite realise how many comments i’d get and how much time it would take to go through all of your blogs..so i’m going to have to stop accepting new links..! I’ll add up a fresh lot in a few months. Sorry if you missed out this time x
A lot of you were asking if I could post a how-to for my beehive hairdo in the previous post. Just to make it clear, my beehive is far from perfect, but I plan on becoming a master!! It’s such an iconic hair style and I can’t wait to find myself the perfect hairband to go with it.
I’m not going to make a tutorial myself (because it would be useless) but send you to the video that I used to create mine the first time around. I found it over at Strawberry Koi Vintage, her YouTube channel features loads more amazing hair tutorials that I can’t wait to try out now I have some free time. Good Luck with your hives – i’d love to see how they turn out! x
